Polarized -vs- Non-Polarized Sunglasses
You might be wondering "So, what are polarized sunglasses anyways?"... We're happy to help bring some clarity and understanding to the subject, check it out:
THE TECHNOLOGY & SCIENCE BEHIND IT:
Polarized lenses are equipped with a chemically-coated filter that's designed to block the sun's blinding glare from reflective surfaces like water, snow, wet roads, metal, car windows, etc. This glare can be blinding and uncomfortable, especially during outdoor activities like driving, boating, skiing, or fishing. When the sunlight hits these flat surfaces, it's wavelengths are reflected horizontally. The lenses on polarized sunglasses have a vertically-arranged filter that only allows vertically angled light through, thus eliminating glare [as the horizontal light can't bypass the vertical filter], providing clearer vision, and enhancing visual comfort.
THE BENEFITS OF POLARIZED SUNGLASSES:
• Reduces glare & reflection
• Provides clearer vision
• Improves contrast & visual clarity
• Reduces eye strain
POLARIZED -vs- NON-POLARIZED - A VISUAL EXAMPLE:
TO NOTE ABOUT POLARIZED SUNGLASSES:
• Polarized lenses will make some LED and LCD screens unreadable and appear "blacked out". Such examples are car dashboard screens, bank ATM screens, digital watches, etc. It's for this reason we don't recommend pilots or operators of heavy machinery to wear polarized sunglasses while operating said machinery.
• If, however, you're looking at your cell phone with polarized sunglasses on, you may notice a shifting rainbow/light pattern on the screen, but you're still able to clearly read the screen... it's likely because the light is being refracted by another material, such as a tempered glass screen protector.
• Polarized lenses are generally priced a bit higher than non-polarized lenses due to the added technology and benefits of the lenses.
NON-POLARIZED SUNGLASSES:
Non-polarized sunglasses have their place & importance in this world, too. While they don't eliminate or block the glare like polarized sunglasses do, they still offer protection against harmful UV light which can be damaging to your eyes. They also don't limit screen visibility when looking at LED and LCD screens, which is a plus. That being said, contrast and visual clarity are a bit sacrificed when compared to a nice pair of polarized sunglasses.
